Plenary Sessions

In addition to the opening session, the Congress will include two plenary sessions. The first plenary session on Thursday, August-Lösch Lectures, is the award ceremony in European Prize in Regional Science including the speeches given by the prize winners. The first European Prizes in Regional Science have been awarded by the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) to professors Peter Nijkamp, of the Free University of Amsterdam, and Jean Paelinck, formerly of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. The second plenary session on Friday is chaired by Professor Heikki Loikkanen (University of Helsinki) and its title is an abbreviated version of the main theme of the congress: Centres, Peripheries and Spatial Development. Two prominent key note speakers, Professor Masahisa Fujita from the Kyoto University and Professor Åke Andersson from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, have been invited to this session.

Technical Excursion, Thu 28 August

An evening on a Finnish lakeside - During the cruise on one of Finland's biggest and most beautiful lakes you have the opportunity to enjoy the green scenery in the sunset, and you will perhaps learn something about the life at summer cottages the Finns so much love. Ashore at the place called Savutuvan Apaja (http://www.savutuvanapaja.fi) you will have time to explore the carefully collected old buildings from around Central Finland, which create an attractive and historically authentic community. An authentic Finnish meal will be served and traditional Finnish music will be played during the evening.

Evening Programme

The following evening programme will be offered to both the delegates and the registered accompanying persons. These events must be registered in advance.

Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception, Wed 27 August

All registered participants and accompanying persons are invited to Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception on the first night at Agora building on Mattilanniemi Campus starting at 19:00 o'clock. This is where also the congress registration desk will be open from 14:00 onwards in the afternoon.

Congress Dinner, Sat 30 August

The last night, all participants and registered accompanying persons will be invited to join the Congress Dinner at the Congress and Trade Fair Centre Jyväskylä Paviljonki (http://www.jklpaviljonki.fi). Due to its flexible facilities, e.g. its revolving auditoria, Jyväskylä Paviljonki is truly a most versatile Congress and Trade Fair Centre located right in the heart of the City. Paviljonki Restaurants are an entity within the Centre providing catering for thousands. The main restaurant has a capacity of 800. Supplemented by the upstairs lobby, the capacity exceeds 1200. Extended into the halls, 5000 guests may be catered simultaneously. Delicious food and entertainment will be provided during the ERSA 2003 night. The dinner will be hosted by Jyväskylä Regional Development Company Jykes Ltd and Regional Council of Central Finland.

Accompanying Person's Programme

In addition to the evening programme mentioned above, a special day programme will be arranged to the registered accompanying persons. The group will be accompanied by a local guide.

Down by the Lake, Thu 28 August

Take a bus ride to Jyväskylä Camping Tuomiojärvi in the morning and make the most of a late summer day by renting a canoe or a rowing boat for a little tour on the Lake Tuomiojärvi.

Visit to the City Museums, Fri 29 August

Free entrance to the Jyväskylä Art Museum, Museum of Central Finland, The Craft Museum of Finland and the National Costume Centre of Finland between 10.00 and 18.00 o'clock.

Morning Coffee at the Market Place, Sat 30 August

The market place is the traditional meeting point particularly for Saturday morning coffee in the summer. Time to do some shopping in the market place: craft items, flowers, fresh vegetables and fish... Climb up the Jyväskylä Ridge and visit the Harju Observation Tower to get the best view over the city and the surrounding lakes.

Pre- and Post-Congress Tours

The following special Pre- and Post-Congress tours will be available in Jyväskylä - and actually, these experiences can only be lived in Jyväskylä of all the places in the world. They must be registered for in advance by 31 July at the latest.

Meet with the Nature, Tue-Wed 26-27 August

Alvar Aalto Tour of Jyväskylä, Sun 31 August

(a minimum of 15 participants)
The three-hour bus tour will introduce you to the Jyväskylä city area and especially to the works of the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (http://www.alvaraalto.fi), who has designed a showcase of buildings in Jyväskylä - there is no place else in the world with that many buildings in the same city. Coffee and refreshments will be served in the Harju Observation Tower restaurant. The tour will close by 1 pm for you to catch the 2:30 pm flight to Helsinki.
Fee: EUR 36 / person

Experience the Real Rally Pulse!, Sun 31 August

(a minimum of 8 participants)
Every August since more that 50 years already, Jyväskylä goes full speed: Neste Rally Finland, the largest sports event in the Nordic countries, is hosted by the city, and in the year 2002 Neste Rally Finland was voted the Rally of the Year. We offer you the exquisite opportunity to test how does it feel and how does it look when you sit inside of a rally car? How about applying a left foot brake? An experienced team driver will take you back stage into the rally world. Having learnt all the basics, you can jump in and experience the thrills and spills of rally driving yourself. After the driving, relaxing sauna bathing and delicious buffee treats are available. The whole programme takes 4-5 hours, and will close in Jyväskylä by 1 pm for you to catch the 2:30 pm flight to Helsinki.
Fee: EUR 200 / person

Information on how to get to the exotic Finnish Lapland or suggestions on how to spend a couple of days in Helsinki, a most beautiful summer city with plenty to see and experience, will be provided for those wishing to travel on their own. Once you have come to Finland, further interesting places to visit would be the neighbouring Tallinn, Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia (information on cruises to St. Petersburg at http://www.kristinacruises.com/view.php?lang=en@id=173).
