Spatial analysis of the high tech cluster in Greater Washington

As the seat of Federal government of the United States, the Greater Washington regional economy has traditionally been government and services-based. When the defense builddown began in the early 1990s, the region’s businesses sought other non-government markets. This has boosted the development of its information and telecommunications sectors. The research identifies the high tech cluster in Greater Washington region and analyzes the relationship between the functional closeness and spatial proximity of the cluster. It is then followed by a discussion of technological innovation and diffusion in this region. Finally, related policy issues are addressed.
