Regional aspects of logistics in Estonia: focusing to southwest
The importance of logistics lies in its ability to transport the other factors of economical progress. Therefore there is also a social demand for transportation services. Threfore economical development in the long term needs vast and long term investments in transport. Nowadays the main tendence is for decentralization, that shows in deregulation of the transportation, strengthening of the market regulation and large scale privatization of transportation units. During the last decades a new economical conception - logistics - has evolved, that is directed towards cutting down costs of maunfacturing and distribution through coordination and optimizing the movement of materials and cargo flows. Transport together with warehousing plays central part in logistics, being more important than other logistic functions. The author is giving a throughful description about the economical history and development of Estonian logistics system in the context of regional aspects today and further. Main attention is focused to the development of transport network in the southwestern part of Estonia, especially as well to recent and further situation of port of Pärnu and its hinterland as to Via Baltica and Rail Baltica project.
