The Market Areas of Austrian Universities

In this paper we will analyse a dataset of first-time university students in Austria. This dataset shows among other things the home location of these students and where they begin their studies. Since Austria has a free access university system, where universities have to accept all Austrian high school graduates, these data reflect the preferences of these students and indirectly the reputation of the various university locations and universities. The Austrian university system is in a pronounced phase of restructuring from a bureaucratic structure to one that is governed by market processes. This process of restructuring will increase competition between the Austrian universities and lead to more differentiation and specialization. Therefore, information like the one derivable from this study is of crucial importance for the strategic reorientation of the Austrian universities.
