Use of Geographical Information Systems in the Urban Park Planning Process
Today in the cities, as a result of rapid urbanization movements, population increase, immigration from rural areas to cities as well as exploitation, destruction and spoil of nature and natural areas the ecological natural balance is damaged, and planning and environmental problems come out of this. The repairing of ecological natural balance for the benefit of human beings and society, structuring the utilization of natural sources in compliance with the environmental conditions and ecological capacity can only be realized by landscape planning studies.
In this study, the data groups to be used in the synthesis and analysis to be carried out for the purpose of constituting the correct planning approaches have been researched and specified by interdisciplinary correlations. Furthermore, it has been intended to point out the facilities to be provided during the urban park planning process of Geographical Information Systems which is a system that provides the use of computer technologies on the subjects of obtaining, producing and gathering of the data. In the scope of study, the data groups used in disciplines related with urban park planning are defined and the data groups to be used at the sample working area are specified by comparing the data groups. After the specification process, an information system is designed based on Geographical Information Systems.
The case study area is the Ortaköy Valley, which stands within the Bosphorus Natural and Historical Site Area in Istanbul and in which the restrictions for construction conditions are reduced even abandoned in recent years, thus suffers with a serious construction problem. The graphical and non-graphical data collected in the light of data groups specified in the previous section are to be rearranged in the selected software and hardware. After the studies aimed at usage and relativity of this data are completed at the selected GIS software, necessary inquiries are made for various analysis and synthesis and necessary evaluations and decisions are made in order to be used during planning process.
At the end of the study, the results obtained from the pilot study of Ortaköy Valley is examined in general of the process, and the facilities provided as well as the problems confronted with at the urban park planning study of Geographical Information Systems in Turkey are reported. Key Words: GIS, Landscape planning, system design.
