Regional development and “innovation systems” in the Nordic countries
The Nordic countries do have lot of economical, geographical and institutional similarities. They have applied the “National Innovation System” approach in their science and technology policy as well as in innovation policy. They are also developing regional innovation policy frameworks for regional development. It is often based on the concept “Regional Innovation System” which is accounting the factors behind regional innovations. The concept do emphasise the systemic and interactive character of the innovation i.e. the interactions between the institutions and organisations.
How are regional innovation systems constituted in different Nordic regions, like capital region, small industrial cities and rural areas? What are the roles of different regions in National Innovation Systems? How can we identify the relations between regional innovation system and national innovation system in the specific Nordic context? What are the characteristics of the spatially distributed knowledge system in the Nordic countries? Are there polarisation between regions due to the national strategies in terms of industrial development and employment?
We are discussing these questions in a Nordic research project "From regional development coalitions to commercial innovations" which has as objective to identify best-case models which may be used for regional innovation policy development in Nordic countries.
