System Behaviours of Capital Cities of European Union Member States
The process of European Integration causes important changes in social and economic fields in general, and these changes bring about globally new identities to cities in continental Europe, besides their roles in very own countries. The capital cities, though, are the units that are affected the most by that changes in overall European city system. At this point of view, the main objective of this paper is to analyze whether capital cities of European Union Member States have system behaviors from 1955 to 2000 by using expanded-rank size model as a tool. The second objective is to interpret the changes in ranks of capital cities in social or economic dimensions in the same period, only if there exists a system behavior. There are diverse parameters affecting this system. Population and GDP, Income as simple indicators are the ones taken into consideration in this paper, besides the theoretical parameters by means of accession years into EU, population changes in time, specialization of cities, international migration rates, investments and GDPs.
The findings, obtained up to now, show that there is no single hierarchy within the European city system. However, the application of expanded-rank size model in European Capital cities and theoretical framework demonstrates that the capitals tend to behave as a system in European Integration.
