The environmental policies and the urban re-qualification in Sicily
The environmental policies are increased their role in the management of urban areas. The failure of the previous tools of urban planning and the lack of financial resources, on the other side, have inspired the necessity of the partnership of all the local actors to get the solution of the urban problems. So a lot of European programmes consider the possibility of a partnership among all the most important local actors to solve the urban problems and the environmental ones. Particularly the application of the Local Agenda 21 Programme gives a way to obtain a best quality of life and a sustainable development, through Action Plans. Specific plans that obviously must be adapts to the problems, to the resources, the culture, to the history, etc of the different city truths. The Sicilian region is delayed in application of environmental policies coherent with the safeguard of the naturalistic resources especially sited in the coastal areas. In fact, during the last decades an exogenous industrial development compromised not only many areas appreciated by tourists but also the quality of life of people living in the biggest towns. Towns grown according to confused models which did not consider the sustainability of the socio-economic development. In this paper the authors want to describe the most recent approaches to better the environmental impact of urban activities applied in Sicily, such as the recycle of waste and the application of the principles of Local Agenda 21.
