Urban Development in Peripheral Regions of the New Europe. The Case of the City of Vigo in Galicia, Spain

The paper discusses the development of peripheral cities in a world where economic integration and the improvement of transport and comunications are on the rise. The paper argues that globalization reduces remoteness (but not everywhere) and improves the institutions for economic and spatial integration. The dynamics of peripheral cities and regions are a question of accessibility and the territory's urban development. The central question, however, lies in the the diffusion of innovation processes, the development of the institutional system and the organization of production. These are interdependent factors that generate externalities through reciprocal interaction and activate development processes. The paper's discussion is based on the analysis of the dynamics of the city of Vigo in Galicia, a peripheral region of the European Union.
