Determinants of regional employment changes in the European Union 1995-2001: An empirical approach
In this paper we examine the regional employment structure and regional employment changes in the European Union during the period 1995-2001. Based on the most recent data our analysis aims to provide an overview of the regional employment structure and to examine the determinants of regional employment changes.
In the first section the contemporary regional inequality in employment rates and employment growth in the European Union is presented. The second section analyses the employment growth rates and classifies the regions according to their employment growth performance by applying dynamic shift share analysis. In the third section an attempt is made to explain the ‘regional effect’ by using other possible explanatory variables. Policy issues and challenges for the new European Union’s employment strategy are also discussed.
