Identifying Key Sectors in Structural Changes: a New Application of Cross-Entropy Techniques
Explaining economic growth has been a topic in the last decades. When one sees a change in the economic structure of a nation or a region, only is seeing the final result of a set of determinants or sources of this observed change.
In this paper we try to identify the key economic sectors in structural changes between two time periods using the concept of Cross-Entropy. His measure of distance has been applied very often with purposes of prediction but not with descriptive objectives. Our approach follows the previous works of Van der Linden & Dietzenbacher (2000) and Andréosso-O´Callaghan & Yue (2000) where the biproportional methods of matrix estimation are viewed as descriptive tools to explain observed changes. We apply this approach not to biproportional but entropy techniques to use them for explaining the sources of economic structural changes.
