The Interface between Regional and Environmental Economics

Environmental aspects have been paid relatively little attention in regional economics in spite of the fact that there is evidence that the environment and environmental policy both affect and are affected by geographic factor mobility, both within and between countries. Important research questions in this regard are: To what extent do environmental attributes affect human migration patterns? How is the environment affected when people move? Does the spatial distribution of environmental quality adversely affect economically disadvantaged groups? Similar questions arise with respect to industry location behavior. How does the location of industry affect the spatial distribution of environmental degradation? How does environmental policy impact industry location behavior? This paper presents a review of the literature on human migration and firm location behavior and the role environmental issues play in this regard. Special attention will be paid to methodological issues. Since several reviews of this topic have been published lately the emphasis will be on under-researched topics.
