Regional Attraction and the Retail Service Industry

The aim of this paper is to analyse the changing local conditions for retail localisation and its impact on the general economic development. As a starting point the municipalities in Sweden are categorised into eight different groups. The characterisation is based on size and growth of the local economy, as well as the external surroundings. This classification is made using measures of accessibility. The purpose is then to analyse the local performance for the different types of municipalities using a set of explanatory variables. These variables are meant to capture important features of the regional market such as size, diversity and proximity to retail services. The empirical model takes into account the simultaneous nature of the inherent processes.
