Efficiency, Profitability and Spatial Externalities: an Intertemporal Analysis for Spanish Industrial Firms

The aim of this work is to further the assessment of the district effect using an inter-temporal efficiency analysis. Previous research has focused in the study of said district effect using a methodology based on radial measures of technical efficiency. One of its principal limitations is the condition of radiality. Now, with the aim of overcoming the previous restriction, inter-temporal non-radial measures, also referred as the Russell measure, are used. A second stage analysis, specifically, an ANOVA analysis, is applied in order to evaluate the relationships between the inter-temporal non-radial indices and the spatial location of the firms. Furthermore, we assess the links between the spatial externalities and profitability and some management characteristics at firm level.
