Aggregate Dutch households’ railway station- access mode choice decision (assigned to theme N3)

This paper has two parts, multinomial logit estimation for the choice of departure railway station and nested logit model for a station-access mode choice are estimated. Aggregate households’ decision data for the choice of origin railway station and accessing mode at the four digit post code level are used. The data covers all the commuter railway stations and postcode areas in the Netherlands. Distance to the station smoothly and dominant affect the proportion house holds choosing a particular railway station as their departure station. Moreover, the number of direct destinations from the station and the frequency of trains affect the choice of a station positively. The model also includes other station related facilities variables. Availability parking lots and park and ride option for the station add to its attractiveness. At the lower level of the nest, the effect of distance on the choice of access mode indicates that as the distance to the station increases of the four alternative modes: walking, bike, public transport, and car; car and public transport are more likely to be chosen. Parking and bike standing lots also mean attractive features for the choice of car and bike to access the station respectively. In follow up estimation we integrate reliable access time and access cost elements.
