Patterns of spatial employment distribution in the main italian urban areas (assigned to theme
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the geographical distribution of the employment in some of the most important italian urban areas, and to verify what kind of patterns emerge. Several studies recently realized in the northamerican countries and in some European countries (United Kingdom, France) focused on the geographical distribution of the employment growth in the metropolitan areas. In particular, they have highlighted the decline of the CBD and the process of employment decentralization according to different “models” (policentricity, multinucleation, scatteration). Following the methodological approaches typical of those studies (such as the methodologies used to identify the “employment centres”), we analyse the census data (at census tract level) concerning the employment by sector in the cities of Rome, Milan, Bologna and Florence.
