TOURISM PRESSURES ON SENSITIVE COASTAL AREAS - Case study of Greece (assigned to theme T)

Coastal areas are important from an ecological and socio-economic point of view as they host a number of areas of special environmental interest (i.e. wetlands and lagoons) but also attract economic activities such as tourism. This contribution presents a methodology to assess the vulnerability of Greek coastal sites of environmental interest to human pressures and environmental risks with the use of GIS and a system of PSI (pressure-state-impact) indicators. The data used refer to population and population growth, tourism and tourism growth in coastal municipalities, particularly coastal urban centers and tourist destinations near nature protected sites (Natura 2000 and Ramsar sites). This method is likely to contribute to policy making through the identification of priority areas for immediate action.
