Regional income differences in Portugal (assigned to theme
Research interest in income differences was born with studies about convergence analysis between countries, using international data. Most recently came out regional studies like the one in Finland (Loikkanen, H. et al (1988), Regional Income Differences in Finland 1966-96, VATT-Discussion Papers), which have concern about income regional differences evolution and its causes. In this paper we apply a similar methodology to study income differences between and within Portugal regions. Portugal have seven major regions (NUTS II) to which we have information about households income. For some of those regions we have information about NUTS III. We use mainly information of Household Budget Survey and other complementary sources, like Regional Accounts or Employment Institute Statistics. Our study is based in indicators like Gini coefficients both per capita and per Atkinson’s equivalent unit, which are applied to different income concepts: primary income and disposable income. By doing so, we can conclude about the redistributive function of state.
