The urban geography of the southern Mediterranean Italian cities has significantly changed in the last decades. One cannot fail to notice how southern Italian cities undergo, today, processes of spatial change that are in many ways similar to those undergone by other western cities. In the present paper I will analyse the specific character of large scale urban redevelopment projects implemented within these cities. I will consider how these projects that capture global trends incorporate them in the particular local setting of the Mediterranean urban reality of the south of Italy.
