DECONSTRUCTION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF CLUSTERS AND MILIEUS - FACTORS EXPLAINING (assigned to theme
Organization of production is a territorial process, the result of the interaction between economic agents and local actors. Clusters and milieus are at present very different from eachother, because of the evolution of industry and technology, as well as spatial dynamics. At present a new wave of sectoral adjustment and territorial transformation is taking place as a consequence of globalization and economic integration. The paper discusses some of the factors that explain these changes from the perspective of the territory’s endogenous development. It argues that processes like the firms’new location patterns, interactive learning and changes in the institutions that regulate the interaction between firm and territories are the effect of territorial strategies of firms and the territories’s economic strategies, and they are responsible for the deconstruction and reconstruction of clusters and milieus. The paper’s discussion is based on the analysis of the clusters and milieus studied within the EU project “International knowledge and innovation networks”.
