Reconceptualising job satisfaction and migration - a preliminary European analysis (assigned to theme I)

Traditional theories of job satisfaction link the individual's reported level of work satisfaction to firm productivity, regional economic growth and rates of in-migration. Rather than viewing migration as an instrumental variable, our research develops an institutional view of job satisfaction that recognises relational linkages between individuals, firms, social networks, regions, and nations. Here we report on an empirical test at a regional scale for the whole of the European Union. Data are drawn from the recent Eurobarometer series. The outcome of this analysis improves our understanding of the concept of job satisfaction and its relation to the economic and social dimensions of migration.
