ICT-use and multinodal growth in large urban regions (assigned to theme K2)

Based on the classical discussion in economics on the centrifugal and centripetal effects of ICT, this paper analyses the locational changes in ICT-using industries in the Dutch Randstad in the period 1991-2002. We apply an indicator of ICT-use to an analysis of industrial changes at a detailed spatial scale. Central in the paper is particularly the deviation of the pattern of spatial changes in the ICT-using industry from general economic changes. The paper is also one of the few attempts that test empirically theories on the influence of ICT on spatial economic changes. In relation to this, the results suggest that it is crucial that agglomeration theory is adapted in order to deal with actual urban processes of deconcentration and multinodality.
