Regional rank size distribution and economic development in Turkey (assigned to theme
In previous studies, the distribution of settlements was examined at national scale and conformity to the rank size rule was observed. Population size of settlements and their distribution overall the country often reflect the distribution of opportunities and investments. There are various discussions on this model in literature: Is it possible to evaluate rank-size distribution as a main indicator of development? Do deviations from the ideal rank size distribution reflect the inner- and inter-regional inequalities in terms of economic and social development? The main aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between rank size distribution and economic development of each region. In this paper, the slope and the linearity of rank size distribution is correlated with socio-economic indicators such as development index, investments, percentage of secondary and tertiary employment and educational attainment at regional level for the period 1950-2000.
