Modelling the Determinants of Spatial Variations in Regional Endogenous Growth - the Australian States (assigned to theme C)

The paper examines factors that contribute to spatial variation in the levels of endogenous employment growth over the decade 1991-2001 across non-metropolitan local government areas in each of the five mainland state of Australia. This is achieved using the classical linear Ordinary Least Squares technique. To evaluate the existence of a spatial relationship between the local government areas a spatial autocorrelation methodology is employed. Two models are derived for each of the five mainland states. The first is a general model incorporating all of the independent variables. A backward iterative statistical procedure is used to reduce the complexity of the general model by eliminating statistically insignificant variables to arrive at a specific model for each state. That identifies a set of variables which we can be confident act as significant factors impacting endogenous growth in employment in regional local government areas in each mainland state of Australia.
