A Spatial Economic Perspective on Energy Productivity in Different World Regions (assigned to theme
This paper addresses energy productivity developments in different world regions over the period 1970–2000. We present a systematic empirical convergence analysis in order to identify processes of convergence or divergence in energy productivity among world regions, including both OECD and non-OECD countries. An important issue addressed in this paper is to what extent spatial effects influence cross-country convergence patterns. We analyse whether convergence is local rather than global and whether the data suggest the existence of regional convergence clubs or convergence clusters by means of modern spatial data analysis techniques.
