Although the railway transport has played a significant role in the forming of the urban network in Croatia and has had in certain phases a key role in linking the cities and in spatial organization and had the major importance in forming of the urbanization axis, today it's importance is second to the importance of road transport. The public urban and suburban transport in all but two cities in Croatia is organized only through bus service. Osijek and Zagreb have tram transport in addition to the bus transport system. In some cities the railway is contributing in the suburban transport, but there are no intended trains or an organized system of urban and suburban transport. Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is the only city so far to have an organized railway urban transport system. However, the involment of the railway transport in the system of urban and suburban transport followed rather late, since 1992. Nonexistence of separate railway network is a major problem because urban and suburban transport is running on the same lines and paralel to the regional and international both passenger and cargo transport. In spite of this there is an imence growth of passengers in urban and suburban railway transport, showing the significance of this form of transport in the future development of Zagreb urban region.
