Determination of housing policies and preferences after the 17th August 1999 earthquake in Istanbul (417)

In Turkey, after the establishment of the Republic different policies and strategies were implemented for the urban planning. With these policies, very important and effective results have been observed in the housing market and residential choices. The aim of the paper is to determine residential location preferences, behaviours and satisfaction of households, which are randomly selected from traditional residential areas and illegal residential areas in Istanbul. In this survey the effects of the policies before and after the 17th August 1999 Earthquake on the housing market have been scrutinized. Concrete results have been established as a result of the survey on aspects such as; housing satisfaction, housing preferences, choices of households, determination of reliable houses and environments resistant to earthquakes.
