This study investigates travel pattern among the provinces with respect to their socioeconomic and demographic charecterictics in Turkey. Many models exist for representing activity patterns and interactions in cities and regions. Such models usually include variables to represent networks and the characteristics of activity origines. Another group of approaches have been developed to offer initial explorations of the problem of modelling structural changes through time. The main objective of this paper is to combine both approaches for dynamic analysis of travel patterns in Turkey. First, travel patterns and characteristics of the provinces are investigated in a hierarchical way through time. Then, the relationships between travel patterns and the characteristics of the provinces are investigated by the use of regression analysis. The results are within the concept of central place theory and ranksize rule. It is possible to identify the nodes with potential for the development of new centers. The results are useful for urban and regional planners and policy makers. Further research is suggested to extend this model by taking into consideration international travel patterns.
