This paper presents an overview of some recent developments in and policy issues relating to intermodal transport in Europe. It describes the current intermodal transport network (in terms of infrastructure and services concerning freight transport)in Europe with special emphasis on the relations between the EU and the Central and Eastern European countries. In addition the quality of intermodal transport in Europe will be assessed based on several (e.g. technical, infrastructural, organisational) performance indicators. Benchmarks are identified for these indicators which will be compared with the current status quo of intermodal transport (identified by an extensive questionnaire among intermodal customers in Europe). The analysis of these outcomes lead to the identification of bottlenecks and potentials for growth of the intermodal transport network in Europe.
