The 2004 Olympic Games are going to be primarily hosted in Greater Athens a metropolitan region that already disproportionably accounts for most economic activity in Greece. Further polarization is being expected as a result of preparing the region for the games. A widespread consensus on this has led to policy initiatives and actions aiming to countervail spatial unevenness in propelling development. Indeed, this sensitivity to spatial asymmetry of the effects of preparing and hosting the games seems to be uniquely characterizing Greek organizing authorities. The aim of the paper is to analyze these policies and exante assess their regional impact resorting to input-output analysis tools.
