The paper offers a theoretical and methodological analysis of the political business cycles and presents, in this perspective, the Romanian electoral process from the 1992, 1996 and 2000. For this purpose, using the econometric tools, the economic reasons of regional electoral support for Romanian political parties are examined. For Romania, the regional electoral data confirm the hypothesis of significantly connections between the state of the economy and political behaviour of the electors. Concretely, the level and the dynamics of the unemployment at regional level have an influence on vote behaviour, as stated by the partisan political business cycle theory: in the areas with a higher unemployment rate the voting preference (tendency) is skewed towards the political left side.
