Authors analyze the economy of the Russian Federation by 89 regions with use of macroeconomic indexes. Five tasks of analysis are presented in the paper.
1. Change of spatial structure of the national economy. The concentration of production and wealth in the most developed regions of Russia is being in-creased and low-power regions are being weakened during 1990th years.
2. Dynamics of Gross Regional Product (GRP). Economic growth in Russia is not sustainable and does not cover all regions yet. The econometric analy-sis reveals dominant role of macroeconomic factors but has not revealed the main regional factors of growth which identical for all regions.
3. Differentiation of regions by the level of socio-economic development. The trend of interregional divergence prevailed in 1990-th years. Apparently, Russia occupies the first place in the world by the level of interregional dif-ferentiation (comparisons with USA, China, Brazil etc. are conducted). The regression analysis shows, that in transition economy the regions with the most developed export of goods and production of market services have re-ceived the most competitive advantages.
4. Spatial structure and interregional differentiation by the used GRP. The joint influence of redistribution of GRP and regional distinctions of buying power of ruble essentially decrease the difference between regions by final consumption and capital formation.
5. Interregional distribution of GRP and interbudget flows. The three quarters of Russian regions have positive balance between produced GRP and used GRP. This result considerably differs from traditional point of view about small number of regions-donors and a lot of regions-recipients. The out-flow of capital from the most regions to abroad is playing significant role. The strong correlation between balance of GRP and balance of "centre-regions" financial flows is revealed. The research is conducted by the order of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation.
