This paper analyses unemployement duration in a longitudinal sample of unemployed from the city of Barcelona. Using a Weibull hazard model we initially conclude that during the 1980's and early 1990's some socio-economic characteristics of the individuals clearly affected the probability of leaving unemployment, whereas employer characteristics were less important. However, the restrictions imposed by this parametric hazard are rejected in this sample. We then resort to a semiparametric proportional-hazard specification that shows that institutional factors also matter. Lastly, we explore a competing risk models to allow for more than one hazard causing failure (i.e. permanent vs. temporary contracts and recalls from the same firm from other exits).
