During the last decade the Baltic Sea region (BSR) has been subject to many fundamental changes. The dynamics of the region have been intensified and reshaped and the political, social and economic barriers between the counties in the BSR have been reduced. We have witnessed many structural changes in the BSR. The candidacy for membership of the European Union of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland has increased the speed of transition. In a larger perspective, interactions between the changes in the BSR and the dynamics of the rest of Europe should be investigated. The BSR provides a full-scale laboratory for studying consequences of the transitions on the economic, political and social conditions of the nations within and outside the region. One of the most interesting tasks that can be accomplished is to analyse how such transitions affect the infrastructure and mobility patterns within and between the countries. Fulfilment of such a task requires information on economic activities and spatial data.
This paper reports on a detailed transportation oriented geographical information system (GIS) prepared for the Baltic Sea region. This GIS has been employed for analysis of accessibility, trade patterns and transportation flows of goods.
