This paper discusses migration (internal migration as well as migration across national boundaries) in Austria in the late 1990s. The authors use a unique dataset that identifies individual migration events, where migration is defined as a change in residence where communities differ. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of migration in Austria in the late 1990s and compares its results with those of migration studies that are based on more aggregate data. This allows us to identify potential biases in migration studies that result from more restrictive datasets. For example, the paper will compare average migration distances resulting from migration data based on small spatial units with those based on larger units of analysis.
