We analyse the role played by the Community technological policy on the reduction of the regional disparities in technology and, secondly, on regional economic cohesion. Concerning this objective, the participation in the Community RD programmes is analyzed, from a spatial and sectorial (industry, university, research centers) perspective, trying to value the evolution of the Community technological policy during the last decades and identify the main factors explaining the disparities on regional participation. We conclude that European technological policy has not contributed to the reduction of the disparities in technological capacity nor economic development of the European regions. Finally, the role played by the R&D activities from the European Regional Policy and the challenge of the EU enlargement are considered.
